GIO PONTI'S CONTADOR WITH SMOOTH MAIDEN SUCCESS

GIO PONTI’S CONTADOR WITH SMOOTH MAIDEN SUCCESS

Contador, a Gio Ponti son out of Champion Catchascatchcan, broke his maiden earlier at Tampa over 8 1/2 furlongs of their turf track. Breaking quite well for jockey Antonio Gallardo, he saved ground along the rail and when the race began in earnest Antonio didn’t panic as he sat behind a wall of horses, swung wide in the straight to relentlessly make ground to win by a half length at the wire. Contador was good value for this success as the runner-up Clearly had first run on him and had swept clear two furlongs out before the Gio Ponti made his move in a manner reminiscent of his sire. Trainer Ben Colebrook reported post-race that Contador may run next in an allowance at the same track before eventually returning north for the Keeneland meet.
