GIO PONTI (c. 4, Tale of the Cat – Chipeta Springs by Alydar) confirmed his spot as the nation’s top turf horse with his 4th consecutive Grade 1 victory in the Arlington Million. Despite a slight stumble at the start, he settled in the middle of the pack to let pacesetter Presious Passion lead the field throughout the backstretch by 10 lengths. As the pack caught up with the leader, GIO PONTI split horses coming off the turn, went 4 wide into the stretch to take the lead and draw clear to win by 1 1/4 lengths.
The talented colt has now run away with 4 consecutive Grade 1 victories, eclipsed the $2 million in earnings, and has earned himself an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf race this November.
“He just does everything so easy,” states Jockey Ramon Dominguez. “Christophe [Clement] was confident and told me to just do whatever I wanted. He’s a pleasure to ride.”
What’s in store for GIO PONTI? That has yet to be decided as Shane Ryan and Christophe Clement agreed that they should enjoy this victory and then they will discuss the best route towards the Breeders’ Cup in November.
Congratulations to Castleton Lyons, breeder Kilboy Estate, and Trainer Christophe Clement and his fantastic staff!
