DREFONG REIGNS SUPREME IN SPRINT

« Return to news

Drefong, despite being bumped at the start, muscled his way to the lead early in the $1.5m Twinspires Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on Saturday. Trading blows with Masochistic for much of the contest, the Gio Ponti colt got the best of his rival deep stretch, found another gear and stormed home to win by 1 3/4 lengths at the wire. This was an excellent training performance from Bob Baffert as the colt had been off the track since annexing the G1 King's Bishop at Saratoga on August 27th. Martin Garcia gave Drefong a very positive and confident ride and he came home here much the best against a worthy field. Baffert said post race, "What a racehorse. What a race...He's been getting better and better...He had trained so well coming into this race, I thought he was peaking. When I saw him in the paddock I just knew he was going to get it done".
Owners Baoma Corporation look like they have a definite contender for an Eclipse Award for his exciting 2016 campaign.
